During the period of 1950, there were no high level languages for programming in the computer field. At that time, only low level languages were there. That is binary level languages were there. After that, assembly level languages were invented. Then the high level languages were invented. Some of the high level languages are C, C++, Pascal, Cobol etc. Even though there was the invention of high level language, they all have many drawbacks. They are platform dependent, non secure, non portable. So with these drawbacks we cannot always use the internet because the program might be developed at one platform and stored in a server. While the client accessing the same program from the different system with different platform, it could not be compatible to execute the same program which was executed in the server, to execute in the client. To overcome these difficulties, there is need of some other high level language that should be developed in different platform and executed and maintained in different platform. So the language Java has developed. The java had got its fame because of its unique characteristics which was not present in any other languages at that time. The unique characteristics of java are Platform independent, Secure, Portable.
